The main goal of the project is the creation of new generation antibacterial skin coverings using bacteriophages. Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically attack specific bacterial strains and enable the fight against resistant bacteria. The general use of bacteriophages is primarily limited by their stability – phage formulations, when stored in inappropriate conditions, quickly lose their lytic activity, and their use in traditional medicinal preparations is therefore quite problematic. NextPHAGE overcomes these shortcomings by encapsulating bacteriophages in nanofibrous materials with a stabilizing function, enabling their use in skin coverings used in hospitals or for home treatment. NextPHAGE will bring an alternative to the use of antibiotics in the treatment of infected wounds without the risk of antibiotic resistance.
