The main goal of the project is to create antibacterial skin covers of a new generation using bacteriophages. Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically attack specific bacterial strains and allow the fight against resistant bacteria. The general use of bacteriophages is mainly limited by their stability - phage formulations, when stored in unsuitable conditions, rapidly lose lytic activity and their use in traditional medicinal products is thus quite problematic. NextPHAGE overcomes these shortcomings by encapsulating bacteriophages in nanofiber materials with stabilizing function and allowing their use in skin covers used in hospitals or for home treatment. NextPHAGE will provide an alternative to the use of antibiotics in the treatment of infected wounds without the risk of antibiotic resistance.
